If you’re looking for a fun, action-packed day on the water, speckled trout fishing in Tampa Bay is hard to beat. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just learning the ropes, targeting this popular inshore species offers a perfect mix of excitement, accessibility, and table fare.

Why Speckled Trout?

Speckled trout are a favorite among Florida anglers for several reasons:

  • Abundant year-round in Tampa Bay

  • Aggressive feeders, making for thrilling hook-ups

  • Delicious to eat, with flaky white meat

  • Ideal for light tackle fishing and fly fishing

  • Found in scenic, shallow water areas—great for beginners and kids

Tactics & Tackle: How We Catch Them

Here’s how we typically target speckled trout on our charters:

    🎣 Live Bait

    • Whitebait (scaled sardines) and shrimp are top producers

    • Free-lined or under a popping cork for maximum action

    🎣 Artificial Lures

    • Soft plastic jerkbaits on light jig heads

    • Topwater plugs early in the morning for explosive strikes

    • Suspending twitchbaits when trout are finicky

We use light spinning tackle, which makes the fight even more exciting—especially when you hook into a gator trout (a trophy-size speck over 20 inches)!
